Solemma creates environmental performance analysis software for the Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) sector.

Meet Team Solemma

We are an international group of designers, building scientists, educators and environmental performance consultants dedicated to crafting tools using cutting edge, research-validated methods.

Our mission is to deliver software that solves the evolving challenges of designers, creates innovations which prioritize the health and productivity of people, and positively impacts the long-term sustainability of our planet.

Solemma Symposia

We regularly organize a full-day event called the Solemma Symposium to discuss the use of environmental analysis tools in design, research, and architectural education. The full-day event includes a series of presentations and discussions focused on recent developments in a wide range of environmental simulation tools and their application to design and performance-evaluation workflows. This sharing in the successes and challenges of our colleagues and customers inspires us and helps chart our course for future development. Previous events were hosted by HOK (2020), Cornell University (2018), UC Berkeley (2017), University of Toronto (2016), Architectural Association (2015), University of Seattle (2014), Thornton Tomasetti (2013) and MIT (2012). Presentations from previous events can be found here.

Product Advisory Group

Our goal is to design intuitive and relevant software products that allow architects, sustainability consultants, engineers and façade component manufacturers to design better buildings faster. To that end we have formed a Product Advisory Group that regularly meets with us to review new initiatives and provide feedback on new feature usability and the overall direction of ClimateStudio and ALFA.

We are thankful to our Advisory Group members for working with us towards a carbon neutral building stock. Current members are: A10, Behnisch Architekten, Gensler, HMFH, HOK, Integral Group, Kalwall, Kinestral, KPF, Lam Partners, Nikken, Perkins & Eastman, Saint Gobain, Shimizu, Snøhetta, Solatube, Studio MA, Takenaka, and View.

Our History

Solemma started as a summer project at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design in 2008 under the guidance of Professor Christoph Reinhart. The goal was integration of validated environmental simulation engines, including Reinhart’s pioneering DAYSIM research, with the digital tools design students were using in the studio like Rhino and the new parametric design interface of Grasshopper.

For over ten years we developed and shared this suite of tools called DIVA for Rhino with over 50,000 students, researchers, teachers and the top sustainable design and engineering firms world-wide. Over this time, key projects with industry partners have aligned our own research interests with new software solutions to dynamic façade modeling, cutting-edge glare simulations, and spectral ray tracing with our ALFA software.

In 2020 Solemma released its new flagship software called ClimateStudio after an intense two year collaboration with industry leaders. Beyond its immediate success as a fast and accurate solution for the AEC industry, the ClimateStudio platform is built to deploy future innovations, continuing our history of bridging academic research and industry needs.
