MIT edX Course offers AIA Credits and ClimateStudio Training

A free course on Sustainable Building Design is being offered from February 28th to May 30th by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) on the edX platform (but it is still not too late to register)! Taught by Solemma’s very own Christoph Reinhart, the course is an introduction to a range of analysis techniques and technologies for designing climate-aware and resource-efficient buildings. ClimateStudio is used throughout the course as the instructional tool. Students and professionals can benefit from this 13-week course, joining over 48,000 individuals who have already enrolled to expand their knowledge on green design and construction while also learning ClimateStudio.

Earn 22 Learning Units from this AIA-approved Course

The MIT Energy Initiative is a certified provider of American Institute of Architecture (AIA) approved continuing education and thus, members of the AIA are eligible to earn 22 Learning Units by purchasing and earning the edX certificate for this Sustainable Building Design course. Current professionals and architects in training alike will benefit from taking this course and expanding their knowledge on the green energy transition and the sustainable construction of buildings

Why sustainable building design?

The field of architecture is at the forefront of climate change, given that the building sector contributes over 40% of the greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming. Buildings have the power to provide huge energy efficiency gains for local and regional economies.

Architects have the tools and knowledge to begin the necessary large-scale transition to clean energy systems and find a balance between mitigating climate change and meeting a growing demand for energy efficient buildings. Specifically, reducing building emissions and designing comfortable indoor environments are important aspects of sustainable building design that software such as ClimateStudio can help architects achieve during the design process.

ClimateStudio produces best-in-class daylight models using architectural models from Rhinoceros 3D or Revit that most firms deal with on a daily basis and early-phase energy models using simplified geometry. Firms not already using an environmental analysis tool for sustainable building design, can easily get set up and start running simulations as a part of the Sustainable Building Design course by MIT on the edX platform.

The Sustainable Building Design course goes into detail on the basic scientific principles behind the thermal and luminous behavior of buildings. Students in the course are empowered to explore designs using the physics-based engines employed by ClimateStudio to produce better buildings with meaningful environmental performance analysis supporting design decisions.
